Heath Streak Consultancy and Sports Development chief executive officer Joseph Rego confirmed at a Press conference yesterday that according to plan the academy will be ready next month.

“If all things go well, the facilities will be ready in January. There is a potential sponsor interested in chipping in this project and if we manage to settle the deal, coupled with the deals we have already, I am hopeful the facilities will be ready in a short period of time,” Rego said.

McDonald Bricks, Davis Granite, SPAR, Colbro Transport, Dulux Paints in Zimbabwe, Fence Africa, National Fencing and Tregers, among other companies are supporting the initiative.

The academy, the brainchild of former Zimbabwe national team cricket player Heath Streak, has roped in businessmen Raj Modi and Elifasi Mashaba into the board of directors.

Streak, the president of the academy, said the project wouldfish for talent from schools in high-density suburbs.

“We intend to give a chance to children from those schools that do not offer cricket so that we can scout for talent.

“We are going to have junior teams of players selected from such schools who are going to engage in a schools league,” Streak said.

“It is important that we as Zimbabweans give our children an opportunity to dream big and I believe that my initiative will improve the quality of life of those children.

“We are not restricting this project to cricket, but we will also engage many other sporting disciplines,” he said.

In their second stage of development the academy will establish a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a professional swimming academy initiated by Zimbabwe national swimmer Ashley Galsworthy, a sports medical clinic and a sports shop selling quality sports goods at affordable prices.

Also on the agenda will be the construction of a pavilion, viewing gallery and a live sports hotel with indoor games and an all-weather indoor sporting structures that will promote hockey. Soccer will also under consideration.

Mashaba said: “They say charity begins at home, that’s why you started this project in Bulawayo so we thank you Streak for this project.

“We promise people of Bulawayo that we will interact with industries and the corporate world so that we achieve the objectives of the academy.

“We hope the academy will spread its wings to all other parts of the country as it would give chance to under-privileged children,” Mashaba added.
