Maxwell Zhuwawo (24) pleaded guilty to assault when he appeared before Gokwe resident magistrate Shepherd Mjanja and was convicted.

In addition, the magistrate sentenced him to five months in jail which was wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

When asked why he beat his wife up, Zhuwawo said she had refused to go and take care of his mother who stays in a different village from theirs in Gokwe.

Prosecutor Mandla Ndlovu told the court that on November 3, Zhuwawo assaulted his wife Gertrude Mahohoma with clenched fists and booted feet all over the body in their bedroom.

She made a report to the police, leading to Zhuwawo’s arrest.
