PLUMTREE — A soldier based in Hwange and a Binga villager are in trouble for allegedly masquerading as police officers and extorting over $1 000 from two villagers at Mphoengs in Plumtree claiming that it was unlawful for them to carry such large sums of money on them.

The soldier, Douglas Mkombwe (27) and Dudman Mleya (20) were not asked to plead to the charges of police impersonation and extortion when they appeared before Plumtree magistrate Livard Philimon.
The case was further remanded for trial. The prosecutor Stanley Chinyanganya told the court that on November 28 at around 4pm, Mkombwe and Mleya in the company of another suspect still at large, went to Bush Stick Stamp Mill at Simelamela area in Mphoengs.
They met Dumisani Ncube and told him they were police detectives from Bulawayo visiting the area for a operation.
They searched Ncube and found him in possession of R4 000. They allegedly told him that it was unlawful to carry such large amounts of money. They allegedly took the money.
It is the State case that on the same day at 6pm, they were at Old Bush Stick Stamp Mill at Makhubu area in Mphoengs where they met Goodhope Saki (26) of Sizinda Bulawayo.
Mkombwe told him to empty his pockets to show everything he had. It is alleged that Saki handed over R9 000, $90, a Nokia 1200 cell phone and a national identity card to Mkombwe.
