The company is run by students from St Faith High School in Rusape.

Apex Beta Fuel is an affordable, locally manufactured product used in reading lamps and made from polypropylene distillation.

St Faith is in a rural area with intermittent power supplies and the students sought to solve this community problem with their business innovation. The first prize was won by Refab Kenya — a team of young entrepreneurs from Nairobi.

They developed eco-friendly cushions filled with recycled synthetic hair covered mainly with Maasai fabric.

Second place went to EcoBizz from Mauritius, a company that produces paper lanterns made from recycled plastic bags, decorative materials, and LED lights.

The finalists showcased their enterprises and business acumen before a panel of independent judges who evaluated each company’s performance against the competition criteria, which included an annual report, a four-minute business presentation before an audience, a trade booth display and a final interview with the judging panel.

Eligibility for the 2013 Africa Region JA Student company of the year competition was limited to student teams that completed the JA Company programme and won national company of the year competitions.
