Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze yesterday said the new nomination fees will be announced today.

“The Zifa finance committee has done their bit and they now have the figures. They now have to just send them to the board for approval.

“The whole exercise is not a fundraising, but it is just for good corporate governance. We do not want to spend money that we don’t have.

“We do not fundraise through elections but through merchandise, levies and gate-takings when our national teams play,” Mashingaidze said.

Last month, Zifa indefinitely moved countrywide area zone elections and said they would be held before the weekend of January 17-19 when the provincial elections will be held, a move that might have been precipitated by the impeding review of the nomination fees. Zifa elections remain set for March 29.

The nomination fees had been pegged between $100 and $10 000 and Zifa received a backlash from the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) which said the figures were prohibitive and discriminatory.

The SRC like in 2010, when Zifa had set exorbitant nomination fees, once again intervened and the football mother body has been forced to review the figures.

Premier Soccer League candidates were expected to fork out $5 000 while those for women’s football, beach soccer and five-a-side had to pay $2 500. Zifa regional candidates were meant to part with $1 500.
