JNNF wants the permanent mall to be along 8th Avenue between Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and Jason Moyo Street.

JMNNF chief executive officer Jabulani Hadebe said this was aimed at creating a facility for informal traders to sell their wares as well as provide leisure facilities because city recreational parks had virtually collapsed.

“We are yet to engage the local authorities to permanently establish a pedestrian mall where the public can show case their talents and get entertainment,” Hadebe said.

“Initially, we want council not to close this mall but turn it into a permanent mall, albeit occupying less space.”

Hadebe said the public had shown a great interest in the mall as people from all walks of life, including foreigners, visit the different stands within the mall in large numbers.

Council blocked the roads close to the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo’s statue and created space for a pedestrian mall that began operating in mid-December and was set to close yesterday.

This was to allow the public space to view the statue of the late veteran nationalist by showcasing their talents through performances in his honour.
