ZIMBABWE’S mobile phone penetration has gone past the 100% mark to 103,5%, with Econet Wireless subscriber base soaring to 8,5 million, according to the latest statistics from the telecommunication regulator Postal Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz).

The statistics covering the three months ending December 2013 obtained by Southern Eye Business also reveal that fixed lines continue to drop in subscribers.

The total number of mobile subscribers is now 13 518 887, which is one million up from March 2013’s total of 12,6 million, the last Potraz statistics indicate.

The total number of fixed line subscribers, according to the statistics, is now 307 202 down from 314 622 in March 2013 in a country whose current total population is estimated at 13,06 million.

Compared with the March 2013 statistics, Econet Wireless grew the most subscribers adding 500 000 from eight million in March to 8,5 million by December 2013.

Under the same period under review Telecel grew the least adding just over 100 000 subscribers from 2,43 million in March to 2,54 million. NetOne, the government owned mobile operator, added 352 000 subscribers growing from 2,1 million to 2,45 million in the same period.

The latest statistics confirm Econet Wireless dominance of the mobile phone market capturing 63% of the market followed by Telecel at 19% and TelOne at 18%.

Econet Wireless is listed as having 8 522 941 subscribers, Telecel 2 544 339, NetOne 2 451 607 and fixed operator TelOne 307 202, bringing the total number of voice subscribers in Zimbabwe to 13 518 887.
