IT SEEMS like Zimbabwe is still lagging behind as far as football is concerned. We are yet to embrace the fact that football as a sport should not only be restricted to team games, but should consider freestyle and support those talented. Juggler-Peter-Mpofu-(2) Ronald Moyo Sports Reporter

Southern Eye caught-up with Peter “Palelo” Mpofu who concentrates on freestyle. He was born in June 22 1987 at Makokoba the home of Bulawayo football talent that has produced the likes of Peter Ndlovu.

At the age of 12 he started his footballing carrier with Celtics, but his carrier was shortlived as he sustained serious ankle injuries and as a result started concentrating on freestyle up to date.

“I started playing football in 1999 when I was playing as a midfielder for Celtics. I was a student at Lobengula Primary School by then. I enjoyed playing behind strikers and I thought one day I would be one of the greatest players, but unfortunately I got injured and I was forced to quit. As someone who had passion for football, I then started doing freestyle and today I am enjoying it,” Mpofu said.

Mpofu has become a source of entertainment not only in football, but also in the streets as he entertains people and is sometimes hired in promotions and some big events.

He showcased his skills in Bindura last year at the 21st February Movement that celebrates the birthday of President Robert Mugabe where he was promised sponsorship.

Mpofu kept people entertained at Barbourfields (BF) Stadium during the half-time of the Mbada Diamonds Cup final between Highlanders and How Mine.

“I also performed freestyle at the 21st February Movement last year in Bindura. I was promised sponsorship, but I am failing to make a follow-up because I do not know the procedures to follow to remind them. I got a token of appreciation from Mbada for performing at BF during the final game between Highlanders and How Mine,” he said.

Financial constraints have played him down in taking part in freestyle competitions in other countries.

South Africa is the nearest country that prioritises free style, but Mpofu has failed to take part because of the lack of sponsorship.
