JOHANNESBURG — Former Zimbabwean international Tinashe Nengomasha is backing coach Ian Gorowa to lead the Warriors to the knockout stage of the Championships of African Nations (Chan)finals.

The Zimbabweans drew their opening match of the tournament against Morocco 0-0 at Athlone Stadium. They will next tackle Uganda today and the Bidvest Wits midfielder expects his countrymen to do well.

“Zimbabwe has got a clever coach in Ian Gorowa. He has been there and done it all in the local scene,” the 31-year-old said.

“The good thing about him is that he is a coach that is locally-based and he knows the culture in Zimbabwe.

“He understands what the nations needs from this team in order to be successful in Africa.

“I think they will challenge very well in this tournament and have an opportunity to win this cup.”

The former Kaizer Chiefs stalwart has also lauded the inception of this tournament, which is in its third edition and is exclusive to domestic-based players.

“This is a good tournament for players who are locally-based,” he added.

“Not many people would have heard of these players before. Players from countries like Uganda or Ethiopia are new to us in this tournament. Even players from Nigeria are new because we are used to seeing the Super Eagles using their internationally-based players most of the time.

“It also serves as a good opportunity for those players who are based outside South Africa to be noticed by the clubs here in the (Absa) PSL and also abroad.”
