PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s sister, Bridget, has died, family members confirmed Sunday.

Mugabe’s only surviving sibling passed away at Parirenyatwa Hospital Sunday morning after a three-year-stint in intensive care since collapsing at the burial of elder sister Sabina in August 2010.

Bridget’s passing provides Zimbabweans with an opportunity to closely watch the Zanu PF strongman amid rumours he too is not well.

A family spokesperson, Kaitano Mugabe, confirmed Bridget’s passing.

“We are yet to meet as a family but it is true that she has left us,” Kaitano, the President nephew said.

Late last year Mugabe said his sister had undergone a minor operation after suffering breathing complications. Her death leaves Mugabe, who will turn 90 next month, the lone surviving sibling.

The veteran leader has watched family members die around him and, in interviews with the public media, revealed his loneliness and exasperation at losing those close to him including political stalwarts he served with in the bush war for independence.

Mugabe returned earlier than anticipated from his annual leave in Singapore and has not been heard from since. Aides however dismissed online gossip claiming he had collapsed in the South East Asian country.

His spokesman George Charamba said the veteran leader was completing what remains of his annual holiday at his private residency in Harare’s posh Borrowdale neighbourhood.
