This comes at a time when the country is battling with a liquidity crunch and most companies are on the verge of collapse. Students who spoke to Southern Eye on Friday said the university demanded full fees before they could commence with the registration process.

“I came here with $200 and tried to register, but I was told I could not. They demanded full fees which I do not have. I tried to negotiate for a payment plan as usual and I was pushed aside again,” a student who preferred anonymity said.

Another student said the institution was trying to be smart for nothing.

“How can they demand full fees yet they know that Zimbabwe is facing an economic crisis? Our parents do not have money due to industrial failure,” a disgruntled student said.

“I was on a cadetship programme and I hoped that if I paid the little money I have I would be allowed to register, but I was wrong. “They told me I should go and raise the full amount before I get registered,” the student added.

A number of university and college students across the country have been forced to drop studies due to high tuition fees ranging from anything between $450 to $1 200 per semester, depending on the diploma or degree programme.

The government scrapped the grant system about a decade ago due to the political and economic crisis.

When contacted for comment, Nust’s information and public relations director Felix Moyo said he had not been around for the past few weeks and would consult with the bursar’s department.

“I will first consult the bursar tomorrow (today) and get back to you as I was not around for the past few weeks,” Moyo said.
