The PSL had put a request to Zifa to have their elections which had been scheduled for February 23 postponed to a later date to enable it to conclude its constitution amendment process.

Their wish was granted by Zifa and the football federation has now set the elections for March 9, 20 days before the Zifa board elections.

Zifa lawyer Ralph Maganga, confirmed the date yesterday.

“We have set the date for the PSL elections for March 9. These elections have an effect on the Zifa board because all the representatives of the 16 clubs are delegates. They have to be vetted first so we have set a date which is before the Zifa board elections to be held on March 29. The other elections do not affect the Zifa board elections,” Maganga said.

The nomination exercise for the PSL elections opened on January 23, but there is still concern from other interested candidates who feel the revised fee of $2 000 from the $5 000 that had been originally set by Zifa is still discriminatory.

Incumbent PSL chairman Twine Phiri is expected to lock horns with Dynamos boss Keni Mubaiwa who has declared his interest to contest one of the biggest jobs in Zimbabwean football. Harare City chairman Leslie Gwindi is also interested in the post.

Mubaiwa says his vision is to bring in sponsors and ensure there is professionalism and transparency in running the top-flight league.

Phiri has said he is still weighing a number of options before making a decision, but chances are likely he will seek re-election.

The incumbent PSL chair, who is also the Caps United president, is credited for sealing a three-year league sponsorship deal with Delta Beverages who have been sponsoring the league through their Castle Lager brand until December 31 last year.

There were also knockout tournaments like the Mbada Diamonds Cup and the BancABC Sup8r tourney and the SuperSport deal which has seen local games being beamed live from various parts of the country.
