Based at the Roman Catholic St Augustine seminary in Sunnyside, the university would offer programmes in commerce and humanities.

James Ndebele, the co-ordinator for the university, urged residents qualified to take up programmes with the institution to apply.

“We have started enrolling students and those who are interested can visit the university office at St Augustine seminary where they can obtain application forms,” he said.

Ndebele said the university will also offer various block release and full time programmes, adding that the thrust of the university is to provide people of Matabeleland region with tertiary education of high and international standards.

“As a university we are working hard to produce students that will meet the required standards of working effectively on the industry and fit locally, regionally and international markets as far as deliverance of work is concerned,” he said.

The Catholic University of Zimbabwe was established on 20 August, 1998, through Statutory Instrument 268, Proclamation 49. The first University Council was established in October, 1998. The first Chancellor of the University was the late Most Reverend Patrick Fani Chakaipa,

On February 25 1999, the University opened its doors to 41 students reading for the Bachelor of Business Management and Information Technology (Honours) Degree (BBM& IT).

In August 2000, the Bachelor of Arts Degree was added. In 2010, there were over 300 students in the two faculties – the Faculty of Business Management and Information Technology and the Faculty of Humanities. The proportion of men to women is about 50:50.

The Catholic University of Zimbabwe provides holistic education in a Christian environment in its teaching, research and service programmes.
