The increase is likely to bite parents who also have to pay their children’s fares to school on a daily basis as they would have to fork out more per trip. Honest Wushe from Matsheumhlophe said the fare increase would hurt them since there was no salary review.

“The increase in the commuter fares is painful for me because our salaries haven’t been increased,” Wushe said. “It’s also too expensive for parents with children going to school.”

Silas Dumane of Mpopoma said he had resorted to cycling to work to cut back on expenses but the increase would affect families with school going children.

Another resident from Lobengula, Precious Khumalo, said the kombi crews were being unfair because they used different dollar-rand exchange rates.
