THE national Under-17 boys and girls’ hockey teams will go into camp in Harare today as part of their preparations for the Youth Olympic Qualifiers in Lusaka, Zambia next month.

A group of 20 Under-17 hockey players will converge in the capital today for the camp that will break on Monday before regrouping on March 5 for the final preparations of the qualifiers.

This was announced by Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) vice-president, Humphrey Chigwedere.

“The Zimbabwe national Under 17 hockey teams will go into camp in Harare on 21 February 2014 for the Youth Olympic Qualifiers to be held in Lusaka, Zambia. The teams will break camp on 23 February and regroup on 5 March for final preparations before departing by road on the 7th of March 2014. HAZ would like to thank the following companies for the timely sponsorship and support in lessening the burden of making sure that the country is represented at the Youth Olympic Qualifiers; Absolute Sport, Intercrop, Cropserve, Alro Shipping and Transport,” Chigwedere said.

The girls’ team is coached by Jackie Lowe, assisted by Anthony Five with Ross Virginia as manager while Rufaro Prince Mwale will coach the boys, assisted by Raymond Buchanan. The boys’ manager is Colleen Nativel.

They will travel to Zambia with physiotherapist Marleen Brand.

The girls will compete against Namibia, Kenya, South Africa, and the hosts Zambia while the boys will battle it out with Namibia, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and Zambia.
