Sparrows Athletics Club and Townsend sprinter Yvonne Vanhuvaone started the year on a high note and is most likely to grab more pieces of silverware than last year.

On Friday she grabbed six gold medals, three individual in the 100m, 200m, 400m events and another three in the 4x100m, 4x400m and the medley relays.

Last year she attained 15 gold, six silver and three bronze medals in all of her competitions including in international competitions.

Vanhuvaone took part in the Zimbabwe National Youth Games in August and won two gold, one silver and one bronze, grabbed silver in the Cossassa games and bronze in the Southern African seniors in Botswana in May, got bronze in the African Youth Championships in Nigeria in April.

She also took part in the World Youth Championships in Ukraine in July.

Rugare Dhure the Townsend Girls’ High sports director said although they are impressed by Vanhuvaone’s start of the season, their sprinter lacks stiff competition which is not good for her improvement.

“It was good and we are happy. We, however, feel that she is lacking competition which will help her better her time,” Dure said.

Milton’s Andile Khumalo was also a menace to the boys under-20s as he always came first in all the events he took part in.

He also grabbed six track gold medals, three in the 100m, 200m, 400m and three in the 4×100, 4×400 and the medley relays.
