In 2012, the then Mines minister Obert Mpofu pledged to buy roofing material, windows and doors for the science block when he address guests at a prize giving event for the Bulawayo school.

Mpofu told the school to go to Monarch and get a quotation and forward it to him for payment, but the SDC accused the headmaster Lymias Moyo and his administration of buying the wrong material.

Dube said Moyo together with the previous SDC had bought the wrong material under unclear circumstances, but they had never explained the issue to parents.

Speaking at the SDC meeting, Dube said: “Badala (parents), I want to speak my mind and I know that will provoke other people but I have to say it because it’s wrong. I am not happy about it.

“The project (science lab) which you assigned us to do has been derailed. Sometime ago, the inspectors from public works came to the school to inspect the project and we hoped that we would have time as an executive to engage them about what was wrong with the project, but we failed.

“They toured the area with Moyo and his deputy leaving us out and I queried why. I then approached the deputy headmaster to explain why they were leaving us out yet we represent parents. Those people left without addressing us and Moyo later told us that the inspectors said they did not need the SDC.

“What were they hiding from us? They are playing politics with a project that should benefit our children.”

Moyo hit back saying Dube was out of order and personally attacking him.

“I am not happy about Dube’s sentiments because it seems I did something wrong. There were some problems with the project. We approached the Monarch guys to give us building material, but they misquoted us,” he said.

“It was just a mistake and I don’t think there is any politics there. If the committee members feel short-changed I will call the inspectors to come and explain,” Moyo said.

Each pupil was asked to pay $10 per term last year towards the project and it had been indicated it would finally kick off this year.
