NOMINATIONS are open for the 2014 edition of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) programme being run by the Bulawayo Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Zimbabwe.

TOYP is an annual international programme through which JCI formally recognises young people who excel in their chosen fields and create positive change. This programme ultimately encourages nominees to continue excelling, while inspiring other young persons to greater levels of performance.

Background JCI, a worldwide community of young active citizens, was formed in 1910 in St Louis, US, and today exists in 125 countries with over 200 000 members. Its membership consists of young leaders and entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 40 years, whose main purpose is to contribute to global advancement while developing leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurial skills and the fellowship necessary to create a positive change.

About (JCI TOYP) JCI Bulawayo, being one of 5 000 local chapters around the world, will in 2014 be running the TOYP programme on behalf of JCI Zimbabwe.

The original programme was developed by Durwood Howes, president of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce during 1930-1931 through a yearbook entitled America’s Young Men which highlighted the work of twelve exemplary leaders each year. The United States Junior Chamber officially adopted the programme in 1938.

In 1983, JCI officially adopted the JCI TOYP of the World Programme and since then JCI has honoured hundreds of individuals from more than 50 countries. Each JCI TOYP honourée has shown commitment to the motto “Be Better”, reminding all of us that, with creative enterprise and hard work — no problem is too difficult to solve.

Past recipients of national awards include such well — known international personalities as John F Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, Elvis Presley, Jackie Chan, Wayne Gretzky, Nelson Rockefeller. Past Zimbabwean honourees include Soneni Gwizi, Strive Masiwa, Betty Makoni and Sabelo Sibanda
