Incumbent town clerk Gilbert Mlilo reportedly earns $16 000 per month, almost double the pay for his Bulawayo counterpart despite managing a smaller town. He is set to leave the municipality in May.

Sources familiar with municipal operations told Southern Eye that the three are among scores of applicants vying for the lucrative post.

“The race is hotting up. We hear there are plans to have Gwanda DA as the next town clerk,” a source said.

“There’s Priscilla Nkala and also Maphala Thuso who used to be in the housing department,” the source said.

Southern Eye could not obtain the current list of applicants. Some of the applicants are said to be non-Gwanda residents, a move that has not gone down well with locals.

Gwanda continues to lag behind in development despite it being the provincial capital of Matabeleland South. Mlilo was initially due to retire in May 2013, but his contract was extended by 12 months to May this year.
