The championship race, which was won by Dynamos on goal difference last year, is starting at the end of this month, according to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“You look at the way the big teams have been doing business in the transfer market and you will realise that they mean business this season,” Zvirekwi said.

“It’s going to be a tough season for all the teams. It’s very tricky at this moment to point out which team will win it, but I think the battle will again be between the so-called big teams. It promises to be a tight contest, even more intense than last season. The big teams have invested well in their squads. They have an equal chance of winning the title,” he added.

Traditional giants Dynamos and Highlanders have been busy on the transfer market, adding some of the best local talent into their squads.

Defending champions Dynamos have added Ronald Chitiyo, Masimba Mambare, Walter Mukanga, Themba Ndlovu and Tafadzwa Rusike, but it is Highlanders who arguably bagged the biggest scoop in Kudakwashe Mahachi. The Warriors talisman is on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns until June.

Some of the big names that have also arrived at Bosso are Valentine Ndaba and Charles Sibanda.

The Bulawayo giants, who were beaten to the league title on goal difference last season, have also recalled Joel Ngodzo and Rahman Kutsanzira. Caps United have even gone beyond the borders in search of the solution that could give them the league title they last won nine years ago.

The Green Machine have imported Malawian international Ishmael Thindwa and Madaliso Mwanza and David Chipala from Zambia to add on to the list of their other new acquisitions Godknows Mangani, Pervington Zimunya and Tongai Magwendere.

Harare City, who finished third last season, but at par on points with winners Dynamos, have also bought wisely bringing in Francesco Zekumbawira, Timire Mamvura, Bensen Maglasi, Arnold Chivheya and Misheck Mburayi while FC Platinum remain a big threat to the established order.

Zvirekwi’s side finished fifth last season, five points behind Dynamos, but he believes that gap will be narrowed in the upcoming season. United will begin their campaign with a home match against new boys ZPC Kariba coached by former Caps United assistant by Saul Chaminuka.

Former Caps United players Tawanda Nyamandwe, Tawanda Munyanduri and David Redhiyoni have also joined the PSL debutants, making this impending duel an interesting one.
