The exercise saw about 25 karatekas from yellow to black belt coming from different provincial clubs to improve their karate skills.

MKU public relations officer sensei Greatman Sibanda said the province was happy with the decision by ZKU to appoint a technical director from Bulawayo as it would help the sport to grow.

“As a province we are happy with what ZKU did to appoint a technical representative from this side because we need his experience. He has the national and international exposure as he participates in international competitions,” Sibanda said.

The karatekas had a gruelling three-hour training session aimed at physical fitness, proper sparing techniques and improving katas.

Sibanda said the squad training was also important as it acted as a coaching clinic to instructors to ensure that they used modern techniques of training.

Gombwe said: “I am more than willing to ensure that the karate standards in this province improve so that we have more karatekas from here making it to the national team.”

He was impressed to see karatekas from Tsholotsho and promised that in his next assignment he would put Tsholotsho in his programme.
