Beitbridge district medical officer Lenas Samhere said some pupils were discharged on Monday and the rest yesterday.

“All the patients were treated at the hospital. I was one of the doctors looking at them,” he said.

“They were discharged yesterday (Monday) and the rest today (yesterday). The situation was under control as of yesterday (Monday).”

Matabeleland South provincial medical director William Busumani also said the pupils were now okay.

“They had accidentally eaten jatropha seeds, but are fine now.

“They had diarrhoea and were also vomiting, but we attended and rehydrated them and they are all fine,” Busumani said.

Matabeleland South provincial education director Tumisang Thabela said she was yet to receive a report on the matter.

“I am on the road and have not received a report, but we have heard that the children have all been discharged from hospital now,” Thabela said.

She said in cases like these, her office would also conduct investigations to establish whether or not there was a case of negligence.
