TRANSPORT and Infrastructural Development minister Obert Mpofu yesterday disclosed that his ministry would today gazette a notice to invite tenders to supply Air Zimbabwe (AirZim) with smaller aircrafts to service domestic and regional routes.

He said the decision was part of the turnaround process of the national airline under the guidance of the ministry. The leased aircrafts are expected to service the golden triangle of Harare-Johannesburg-Victoria Falls route, Mpofu said.
“We will gazette this week the tenders for specified aircrafts for AirZim starting with smaller planes which can carry between 35 and 50 passengers to service the local and regional routes,” Mpofu said.
The flagship carrier used to operate three Chinese-made MA60 planes to service domestic routes, but the planes have since been grounded. AirZim then entered into a lease agreement to operate an Embraer jet, but it has since run out.
Meanwhile, Mpofu said a total of 39 companies had submitted tender bids for 16 roads under the build-own-transfer projects across the country.
He said the bids came from different local and regional construction consortiums.
“The three roads that did not get bidders by the cut-off time were Murambinda–Birchenough Road, Karoi–Binga Road and the Golden Valley–Sanyati–Kuwirirana–Nembudziya Road,” he said.
