An official of the team, Elton Sinyosi, yesterday confirmed the development.

He said the competition that will now run from April 23-27, was initially set for May, but was brought forward to April as Botswana will be hosting the African Youth Games in May.

“The team will go to camp on April 13 at Northlea High School. They will start training on Monday, so we are making sure the coaches will be ready by then,” Sinyosi said.

“We are still facing challenges with athletes’ travelling documents as some still do not have passports, but we are trying our best to get them.

“We have few days to prepare for the competitions because Botswana will be hosting some competitions in May, so the days have to be brought back.”

Zimbabwe are the defending champions.

The Under-18s to represent the country in the cross-country, track and field events were selected during the National Secondary school Heads inter-provincial competitions that were held at Peterhouse College in Marondera last month.

A week later the Under-14 team was named in Hwange after the National Association for Primary School Heads inter-provincial competitions that saw Mashonaland West emerging winners.

Zimbabwe utilised home advantage to bag 19 gold, 20 silver and 22 bronze medals last year to win the competitions.

They were followed by Namibia who collected 38 medals; 19 gold, 11 silver and 8 bronze.

In their quest to defend the title, Zimbabwe will be hoping for medals from Townsend and Sparrows sprinter Yvonne Vanhuvaone in the Under-18 category while Mthabisi Dube who was named athlete of the year during the Naph inter-provincial competitions will be expected to shine for the Under-14s.

Also to watch for Zimbabwe is Dorothy Kavungula from Mashonaland East who won the Naph athlete of the year award in the women’s category.
