The clubs that were expected to compete against countries like Egypt, Algeria and Angola are Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo High School (Matabeleland South), TS Alliance (Harare) in the men’s category while Ajax (Bulawayo) and Danamombe from Masvingo were the women’s teams. Zimbabwe Handball Federation secretary-general Alphios Magiya yesterday confirmed that the clubs would no longer be travelling.

“We were supposed to have four clubs representing us in the 30th Men and Women’s Africa Clubs Championships for Winners Cup for Congo, Brazzaville, from May 15 to 26. But the teams would no longer be travelling because they failed to meet the registration deadline which was April 20.

“There were lots of challenges because they failed to meet the financial obligations, he said.

“They needed about $12 000. But with the prevailing economic conditions it was difficult for the clubs to raise that money.”

Magiya said it would have benefitted the clubs had they travelled for the competition.

“Failing to travel was due to circumstances beyond the clubs. However, the clubs could have benefited from competing against other African clubs. There are also financial benefits if the club performs well. It would also have been the platform for the clubs to expose their talents,” he said.

The clubs were selected at the national season championships that were held in Gweru in January.
