Lees ran in the senior women’s 100m category and came first setting his personal best of 11,75secs during the Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) clubs championships hosted by National University of Science and Technology (NUST) on Sunday.

“I am preparing for the schools convention in America. I expect to do well there, but I know it is going to be tough. Taking part in this completion is a boost because you do not improve through training, but in competitions. I am surprised I beat my personal best time of 12,36secs,” she said.

Lees could be the latest from the NCA Academy to secure an athletics scholarship after American-based sprinter Reynard Ndlovu.

Ndlovu who is currently in the country stole the lime light at Nust on Sunday during the club championships winning the senior men’s 400m in 47,30secs getting the better of Sportstech Athletics Club’s Andile Khumalo who came home in 47,90secs.

The 21-year-old Ndlovu, a former Petra High School student got a scholarship to Oral Roberts University in US after he set a Zimbabwe Under-20 400m record of 47,98secs in the 2012 Zone VI games in Zambia.

He is currently studying towards first degree in Bachelors of Science and Business Administration.

After the competition Ndlovu said: “It is good to be at home, it is also encouraging to see young athletes competing. My aim is to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.”

BAB chairman Manuel Mpofu said the event held at Nust on Sunday had been set to identify young athletes to represent the province in the youth competitions slated for Masvingo in July.

“We want to identify a team that will represent the province during the youth championships slated for Masvingo. We are going to keep on having track and field events so that the athletes keep on shaping up,” he said.
