Pelandaba-Mpopoma MP Bekithemba Nyathi has been appointed chairman for the youths. The youths said they fully backed all national council resolutions reached at Mandel Training Centre in Harare in April.

Several senior party MDC members led by secretary-general Tendai Biti, Elton Mangoma and Samuel Sipepa Nkomo broke away from party leader Morgan Tsvangirai after they called on him to step down from being leader. However, another faction of the youth assembly is still loyal to Tsvangirai.

“MDC-Team democrats and friends are delighted to inform you that Bulawayo Youth Assembly has peacefully moved forward and positively. It has dissociated with other violent and unproductive associates. This is a fulfilment and support of resolution of the National Council held at Mendal on the 26 of April 2014,” it said in a statement.

“We strongly condemn violence as MDC Team and we believe anything associated with violence is Zanu PF agenda. Harvest House has been declared a war zone.

“As Bulawayo province we have constituted our provincial management committee for the youth and Bhekithemba Nyathi as chairman, Thulani Ndaba (vice-chair), Hapson Ncube (secretary-general ) and Sonny Poya as organising secretary”.

The renewal team is working with other political parties to form a grand coalition that will see parties agreeing to field just one presidential candidate against President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF in 2018.

The coalition excludes former Prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s faction and but incorporates MDC led by Welshman Ncube, Dumiso Dabengwa of Zapu and Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn led by Simba Makoni.
