The supporters were coming from the Highlanders-Buffaloes match which was played at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare.

Highlanders Gweru supporters’ chairman Nhlanhla Dube said the five were injured after they failed to negotiate a turn when the headlights of the Nissan Ex-Saloon they were travelling in, suddenly went off.

“The driver of the car was Progress and he was travelling with Never Khanye, Xolani Mpala, Khiwa Tshuma and Siyamukele Mvundla. They were travelling from Mutare after the match and their car hit a tree just after the Buhera turn,” he said.

Dube said the accident happened at around 8:30pm and said they were not speeding when it occurred. He said Tshuma was seriously injured and had been transferred from Chivhu Hospital to Gweru Hospital.

“They were admitted overnight at Chivhu Hospital and discharged, but Tshuma is still admitted,” he said.

“He was transferred to Gweru Hospital. He is meant to go for an X-ray today (yesterday), however, the rest seem to be fine although they were injured, but not seriously.”

Highlanders chairman Peter Dube confirmed that they had received news of the accident but said they were still to get details.

“We have heard about it but we need to get more details. We need to clarify to what extent the people were injured. At the moment we cannot say much about it because we are trying to gather more information,” he said.

Supporters have in the past been injured or killed as they travel back from matches.

Last year Hwange- based Caps United supporters were injured in an accident after their team played against Highlanders.
