Obey, who ran the 6km in 28mis 39,66secs and finished position 14, has registered for the Nkulumane fun run and will be putting on bib number 0295.

His father Brian yesterday confirmed the toddler’s participation and said he is grooming him for the South African Comrades Marathon when he gets to the age of 17.

“I am just interested in the time that he will do in the race. He is very keen in athletics and I am grooming him for the Comrades Marathon when he turns 17 or 18 years old. He will probably be the only toddler that will be taking part in the race,” Brian said.

In January, Obey beat the Under-16 girls, winner by close to three minutes and was ahead of seven athletes in the race that had 21 athletes.

Obey is a Grade Two pupil at Samathonga Primary School in Ehlekwini and his father Brian used to run for Harlem Sports Club in Mutare.

The Bulawayo Athletics Board urged athletes of all ages to register for the Old Mutual Nkulumane fun run and by Friday about 100 had registered.
