Nyaradzo Nyawungwa (38) pleaded guilty to an assault charge when she appeared before Bulawayo senior magistrate Sibongile Msipa and she was convicted, warned and discharged.

When asked why she assaulted her husband, Nyawungwa responded: “When my husband came home, he said my feet were smelling and that is when I punched him. I assaulted him once with a fist.”

When asked why she had violated an earlier court order, Nyawungwa, said her husband Claudious Mufaro Jiri had come home drunk and brought another woman into the house which angered her. In mitigation, Nyawungwe said she was married with four children.

The magistrate got impatient at some point when she spoke non-stop and ordered her to stop talking. She said her last reason for assaulting her husband was that he had poked her with a mobile phone.

Allegations against Nyawungwa were that on April 15 2014, at around 7pm, Jiri was washing plates when for no reason Nyawungwa began shouting at him.

When Jiri remained silent, Nyawungwa punched him once on the chest breaching a court order that she should not act violently against her husband.
