The paper published by Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) is celebrating its first anniversary this month after hitting the streets on June 3 last year.

AMH also publishes NewsDay, The Standard and the Zimbabwe Independent.

The 12km walk started from the City Hall and ended at Hillside Dams. Residents from all backgrounds took part in the walk with the youngest being a 10-year-old.

Edgars Stores Limited, Greens Supermarket, City of Bulawayo, Radio Dialogue, Beejery Embroiders, Nokel Security and Emras supported yesterday’s walk. Transport back to City Hall was provided.

Edgars Stores Limited group corporate social responsibility manager Stephen Guwa said the event was well organised and they expected it to grow bigger next year.

“The event was well organised as symbolised by the huge crowd turnout and this is what we are looking for,” he said. “This was bigger and we are expecting such an event to happen every year.”

He encouraged event organisers to schedule the walk for summer instead of winter to encourage more people to participate.

Greens Supermarkets branch manager Elijah Rukwava said they supported it because of its focus on charity.

Southern Eye deputy editor Njabulo Ncube thanked sponsors and residents who took part in the event.

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in this event and we are promising a bigger one next year,” he said.

“This event will be conducted annually and the funds raised today will be channelled to old people’s homes in the city.”
