Five pupils aged between eight and 11 jumped out of the vehicle and sustained serious injuries after the driver, who had given them a lift on their way from school sports activities, refused to stop at their drop-off point.

Two of them were immediately transferred to Bulawayo and admitted at Mpilo Central Hospital where one of them reportedly died last week. Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda confirmed that the three pupils who were at Binga Hospital were transferred elsewhere for treatment.

“It’s true the pupils were flown out of Binga for further treatment. I am not sure where to, but here in the country. On the death of the other pupil I have no information,” Sibanda said.

The accident happened two weeks ago. The vehicle they were travelling in belonged to a Christian non-governmental organisation which was established by a prominent businessman to raise school fees for disadvantaged and orphaned children.

Binga Ward 4 councillor Elmon Mudenda said he was grateful that the organisation facilitated airlifting of the pupils for further medical attention.

“We are very grateful to the organisation for flying the pupils so that they could receive better medical treatment,” he said.

“Their condition was serious, but we now believe they will recover soon after receiving specialised treatment.”
