Minutes of a council meeting attended by the business community and other stakeholders on June 5 indicated that businesspeople were worried that the local authority was not doing enough to deal with illegal vending.

A representative from Lilina Fashions said council was failing to control vendors who were affecting their business operations.

“We are expected to pay rates yet council is failing to control illegal vendors who are disturbing our day-to-day business operations. We lose customers, particularly motorists, who fear damage to their cars by these vendors,” the representative lamented.

The manager of Gweru Computers identified as a Mr Gwaendepi, said vendors were blocking the pavement outside his shop and called for stiffer penalties against them.

Council housing department official Mar Gambiza said vendors had designated sites, but strayed to maximise on profits.
