Their lawyer Thulani Nkala yesterday confirmed the arrest of Mmeli Dube, Butholezwe Kgosi Nyathi, Ntombiyezansi Thozwana Mabunda and Thulani Moyo.

He said the four had reportedly conducted the meeting at around 1pm and they were arrested at around 5pm at Ndlovu business centre in the resort town.

“They are being charged with contravening Section 24 of the Public Order and Security Act subsection 6 (holding public meeting without notifying the regulating authority),” Nkala said.

“They spent the night in police cells and they have since been made to sign warned and cautioned statements. Hopefully they will be taken to court tomorrow (today)”.

Indications were that they would spend another night in police cells. The police accused the four of not seeking police clearance to hold the meeting.

Abameli Human Rights Lawyers yesterday called for the release of the officials saying their arrest was not only unconstitutional, but also abuse of authority by the police.
