Athletes from  around the country converge in  different provinces each year to compete in sporting disciplines which include athletics, basketball, handball, tennis, boxing, football, netball and volleyball.

Last year, Matabeleland North put up a dispiriting show coming last with one gold, two silver and three bronze medals having also came last in the two earlier editions that were hosted by Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland South.

Zimbabwe Handball Federation Matabeleland North chairman Churchill Mabasa explained why they were conducting the coaching clinic.

“Compared to other provinces our performances in the Zimbabwe National Youth Games has been very poor. We are always last. So we decided to hold the handball coaching clinic mainly targeting school teachers because they are the ones who train players who represent us in such games. If we have fully trained coaches then that could help us get good results,” he said.

“We are expecting four instructors from  Zimbabwe Handball Federation to facilitate the coaching clinic. Participants are expected to pay $60 each. We will have another coaching clinic at Mavela Secondary School in Tsholotsho from July 14 to 18.”

Mabasa said they selected the Matabeleland North handball team expected to  fight it out in Masvingo  next month at David Livingstone Memorial Secondary School last week.

The boys and girls’ team comprising 39 players is expected to go into camp for a week when schools close for the August holiday in preparation for the games.

The competition  was used to select the  team to represent the province in the National Association of Secondary Heads handball national finals to be played in Bulawayo this month.

Gebhuza  High School from Hwange will represent the girls section while  the province will pin its hopes on Inyathi High School  from Bubi  district in the boys’ category.

Gebhuza beat St James  6-5 in the final while Inyathi finished on top of the log table after winning their four matches.

Inyathi competed against Tsholotsho, Fatima, Hlangabeza and Nhlambabaloyi.

Teams that took part in the girls’ section are Tsholotsho,  Hlangabeza, Inyathi, Zwangendaba as well as St James and Gebhuza.
