THE Matabeleland South Track and Field Open Championships have been postponed indefinitely as the board failed to raise enough funding for the event.

Matabeleland South Athletics Board chairperson Lisimati Phakamile confirmed the development saying they had not started registering athletes.
“We have indefinitely postponed the event. We have not raised enough funds to host it and we will have to schedule it for another day,” he said without divulging how much they had been meant to raise.
Phakamile said the meet was scheduled for Pelandaba Stadium in Gwanda town tomorrow and Sunday.
“It is a big disadvantage for us because we were going to use the event to prepare for the (Zimbabwe National) Youth Games. We wanted the competition to be our final preparation for the national games, but it is beyond our control,” the national athletics coach said.
The Zimbabwe National Youth Games are pencilled for Masvingo on August 16 to 24.
He said they were hoping that Blanket Mine would organise their athletics championship which they will then take part in.

“We are still to know whether Blanket Mine will organise their athletics competition. If they do then we will be able to take part in that, but last year they failed to organise it,” Phakamile added.
