The victim, who was identified as Silas Svingu, sustained a swollen face and tongue as well as severely bruised lips.

His legs were also badly injured and he had difficulties talking.

Svingu said he was drinking alcohol at Sekusile shopping centre with friends and was too drunk to remember how he ended up in the Emganwini bush.

“I remember drinking beer with friends and later on being beaten by five men that threw me into the stream.

“They took one of my tennis shoes and $100 from me,” he said.

“The men beat me all over the body with fists until I became unconscious. I was only woken up by passers-by this (yesterday) morning.”

Manasa Ngwenya, who was the first person to spot Svingu yesterday morning, said he thought he was dead.

“I thought Svingu was dead, but other people realised that he was alive and we pulled him from the banks of the stream,” he said.

“He is lucky not to have fallen into the water otherwise he would have drowned.”
