The decision to auction the old vehicles was reached at a full council meeting recently.

Environmental Works and Management Committee chairperson Mduduzi Ncube said council wanted to get rid of unroadworthy vehicles.

“The engineering department should identify all vehicles which can be auctioned and present the list to the committee,” he said.

The acquisition of the new vehicles has sparked a furore among workers who accuse management of getting its priorities wrong.

Workers have gone for almost six months without pay now and have threatened to go on an indefinite strike next Wednesday.

The cash-strapped municipality has resorted to selling land to pay debtors whom it owes over $10 million.
