Addressing journalists after chairing the party’s national elections directorate meeting, Moyo said their investigations had shown that the kidnapping reports were false.

“I must hasten to state that yesterday’s media reports that a number of kidnappings associated with the conference had taken place in Mashonaland Central, Manicaland and Masvingo provinces have been proven false and alarmist,” Moyo said.

“I appeal to the leadership of the women’s league to refrain from making such unfounded statements. The nation is at peace.”

Women’s League boss Oppah Muchinguri had on Monday claimed that several women delegates had been kidnapped by their rival factions to ensure they would not participate in the league’s internal elections.

Two factions reportedly led by Vice-President Joice Mujuru and Justice minister Emmerson Mnanagagwa were reportedly jostling to succeed party leader President Robert Mugabe.
