National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, adding that police were getting worried over the surge in road traffic accidents involving haulage trucks.

“The accident occurred around 9:30pm on August 13 2014. The police details and the civilian driver were travelling in a Mazda 323 vehicle heading towards Gweru when they were involved in a head-on collision with a freightliner haulage truck travelling in the opposite direction,” Nyathi said.

“They all died on the spot and their bodies were conveyed to Gweru General Hospital mortuary for post mortem. Four passengers in the haulage truck, including the driver, sustained serious injuries and were all reffered to Gweru General Hospital,” he said.

Two other fatal accidents involving buses and haulage trucks occurred along the Masvingo-Beitbridge and Harare-Nyamapanda roads over the past two weeks.
