The new Highway Code incorporates road signs from all countries in the Sadc region. TSCZ spokesperson Ernest Muchena said they had realised that people from Mozambique, Angola and other countries had difficulties in using the Highway Code, thus the need for them to be accommodated.

“The new Highway Code will accommodate the Sadc road signs so that people from different countries can interpret the signs on the roads,” he said.

Muchena said TSCZ was consulting members of the public first before publishing the new Highway Code.

“We are still doing the consultation and advertising the signs then we will publish the Highway Code pertaining to the public’s views and opinions,” he said.

Some of the changes in the draft code include sign codes, warning signs, blue and white colour signs, derestriction signs, specific rules for pedestrians, animals, cyclists, drivers and passengers.

The Vehicle Inspection Department suggested that people should be ready to be examined from the new Highway Code. According to Muchena, the new Highway Code would uplift the standards of driving in Zimbabwe.

He also said a children’s Highway Code would be launched to teach them how to safely use the road.

“We are also planning to launch a children’s Highway Code so as to teach them how to use the road,” said Muchena.

TSCZ has already launched the draft Highway Code in Chinhoyi, Masvingo, the Midlands and Mashonaland West.
