Tapiwa Mumvana of Senga high-density suburb appeared before regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire.

The complainant, Tafara Tizai of Gweru Central Police Station, was on duty with a colleague when they approached Mumvana in a bid to arrest him for offloading passengers at an undesignated point.

The State said on March 18, Mumvana was offloading passengers at Puzey&Payne in the city centre when Tizai and a colleague, who were patrolling on bicycles, approached him.

Mumvana reversed his car in a bid to escape arrest.

He then knocked Tizai’s bike and the cop jumped onto the bonnet to avoid being run over by the car.

Mumvana then allegedly sped off movie style along Mvuma Road and pulled off the traffic circle close to the show grounds with the officer still precariously holding on to the window screen wipers.

Tizai managed to switch off the ignition when the driver’s door opened, leading to the arrest of Mumvana.

Tizai sustained a swollen mouth during the ordeal.

The trial continues tomorrow.
