BULAWAYO councillor for Ward 24, Gideon Mangena, has proposed the installation of rumble strips at ‘black spots’ along Masiyephambili Drive to curb accidents caused by speeding motorists.

He also called for a traditional ceremony to cleanse the road.
According to the latest council minutes, Mangena made the remarks while commending efforts made by jet patching on parts of roads in the city.
“However, he was concerned that particular areas, especially along Masiyepambili Drive, continued to be black spots with frequent reports of accidents, injury and loss of life.
“He cited the road’s intersections with Goldrich, Nketa Drive, next to Nkulumane 4 Fire Brigade, Mambo One Way, Khami Road, Pumula Road and Luveve Road (Vanbek area),” parts of the minutes read.
“He therefore suggested that rumble strips be installed at these spots in order to reduce speed.
“He also suggested that after such installation of the rumble strips, a traditional cleansing ceremony be conducted to officially open the road. Perhaps this way the carnage on the roads could be reduced.”

Mangena’s proposal was, however, challenged by Ward 4 councillor Silas Chigora, who said too many humps or rumble strips along Masiyepambili Drive were undesirable as they could affect emergency services response times to the detriment of the community.
“He said focus should be on motorists who were largely to blame for speeding, particularly emergency taxi drivers. These should be specially targeted for attention in this regard,” the minutes added
Councillor for Ward 21, Rueben Matengu commended the engineering services department for its prompt action in installing humps and zebra crossings near Maphisa Primary School in Sizinda following the unfortunate incident where two children were knocked down by a vehicle on the spot recently.
He urged the department to make similar changes at another road linking Tshabalala Extension to the shopping centre.
