GWERU City Council has moved to plug revenue leakages through unregistered vendors through the introduction of vending badges for all hawkers trading in the city.

The badges, that cost $5 each, would contain the vendor’s details, including full names, residential address, bay number and vending account number given by the municipality.
The introduction of the vending badges comes after councillors had expressed concerns over loss of potential revenue as vendors using council stalls could not be easily identifiable.
“You are hereby notified that council will introduce vending cards to all vendors and the following information will be on your vendors’ cards; full name and address, passport size photo, identity number, bay number and account number,” a council memo released by the council’s department of housing and community service, reads.
The department further stated that all vendors that fail to register for the badges would be forced to forfeit their vending bays.
Mayor Hamutendi Kombayi said the move was meant to ensure that council was not prejudiced of revenue through chaotic vending.
“We want to ensure that there is order at our vending bays and enhance revenue collection for the benefit of the city,” Kombayi said.
