MARK MANOLIOS is once again back at the helm of local hockey after being elected new president of Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) at the association’s elective annual general meeting held on Friday at Gateway High School in Harare.

FORTUNE MBELE SPORTS REPORTER Manolios, not new to the sport which he has been part of for over 50 years as player, coach and administrator, takes over from Gavin Stephens who was voted into office two years ago at a meeting held in Bulawayo.

The veteran sports administrator who has sat on the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee and Sports and Recreation boards and at the Federation of International Hockey will be running the affairs of HAZ for the next two years.

Humphrey Chigwedere of Mashonaland Central was retained as vice-president, Sarah Bennet of Harare as secretary while Neil Evans from Harare was elected treasurer taking over from Virginia Ross.

Committee members are Nicola Watson (Bulawayo), Bill Birkett (Harare), Tongai Mukwewa (Masvingo), Prince Mwale (Harare) and Pauline Ndlovu from Bulawayo is the new athletes’ representative.

HAZ also recognised players, officials and administrators who excelled during the course of 2014.

Ross was awarded with an honorary award for her contribution to the game of hockey.

Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and is blessed with two state-of-the art venues in Kumalo and Magamba while various schools across the country, from Hippo Valley to Plumtree play the sport.
