The rugby junior development programme will be graced by Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Tabetha Kanengoni Malinga who will be guest of honour and Information, Media and Broadcasting Services deputy minister Supa Mandiwanzira.

Eight schools from Bulawayo’s western suburbs are expected to take part in the final round of the cup tournament organisers have said the tournament will provide Zimbabwe Rugby with an opportunity to grow and promote the sport in the country this year and beyond.

“On Friday, the development programme will see Hartsfield Grounds host the final round of the Inter-Community Cup, an event that seeks to provide talented rugby players from St Columba’s, Entumbane, Msitheli, Nkulumane, Sobukhazi, Sikhulile, Northlea and Mzilikazi with an opportunity to compete against each other at Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 levels.

“Eight of the development teams that have been identified by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union will showcase their talent,” the organisers said. The tournament started a couple of months ago with a number of players being identified for selection for future junior national teams.

Rugby has mostly been associated with A schools that include Falcon, Christian Brothers College and Plumtree High School and schools in the western suburbs seemed to be marginalised.

Organisers of the tournament have previously indicated that the tournament would serve as a platform for the players in the western areas to be seen and selected for competitions such as the Coca-Cola Craven Week in South Africa.

Matabeleland Rugby Football Board provincial development officer George Mukorera said they were ready to host the tournament.

“We are hosting eight schools at Hartsfield on Friday. The aim of the tournament is to choose a select side that will play against a Harare select side. We will finalise details of when they will play on Friday,” he said.
