MDC-T takes back ‘rebels’

MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Friday welcomed back some members of his party who defied his directive not to contest last year’s harmonised elections and pave way for MDC rebels who were expelled after voting for Lovemore Moyo for Speaker of Parliament after the 2008 elections. Albert Ncube Own Correspondent Former organising secretary Solani Moyo, who defied Tsvangirai’s directive not to contest in the parliamentary elections in Bulilima East and pave way for Norman Mpofu, bounced back as the party’s provincial chairperson, beating Moffat Ndou and Mqabuko Ndlovu in Friday’s peaceful provincial elections held at Gwanda District Club.

Moyo was given the green light to contest after he reportedly wrote a letter to the party’s leadership apologising for contesting the elections as an independent candidate.

Tsvangirai, his deputy Thokozani Khupe and party chairperson Lovemore Moyo were part of the leadership that attended the elections. Moyo replaced Watchy Sibanda, who has since joined the MDC-Renewal team. His deputy will be Gladys Mabuza.

Moyo said he was happy to return to the party and will work hard to see that the MDC-T retains control of Matabeleland South after losing all the seats in 2013 elections.

“The people have put faith in me and I am grateful for that and promise to deliver. My mandate now is to recover the seats that were stolen from us by Zanu PF,” he said.

Vela Tshili, who initially opposed the party’s decision to impose Nomalanga Khumalo in Umzingwane constituency, was elected the provincial secretary-general and will be deputised by Gabriel Ndebele.

Although Tshili did not contest the elections, he had fiercely opposed the imposition of Khumalo, who defected from the Welshman Ncube-led MDC.

Khumalo was elected the party’s provincial treasurer, while Nephat Mdlongwa is now the organising secretary.

Mthokozisi Bhebhe retained his post as the information and publicity officer. Nomathemba Ndlovu and Morgan Ncube were elected to lead the women and youth respectively.
