The Region V Games will be held in Bulawayo on December 5 to 15 with 15 countries expected to converge in the province for the bi-annual event.

Marketing director for the games, Kennedy Ndebele, appealed to the country’s religious community to pray for the games.

“We are finalising details on the prayer for the games which will be held on the weekend of October 18 and 19. We are therefore appealing to all churches to help us make the games a success by praying for them,” he said.

Ndebele said they were aware that most Zimbabweans were a religious lot before setting aside a weekend to pray for the games.

“We fully appreciate that Zimbabweans are a predominantly religious society. If we pray with unity of purpose during the games we are guaranteed that they will be a success,” Ndebele said.Mascot

The prayer for the games will be held at different denominations countrywide.

“It will be nationwide at different churches, houses, halls and under different trees. We are devoting the weekend to the games. We want to give the games strength and bring families together. The games are also meant to bring a spirit of brotherhood, peace and unity not only in the country but in the southern region as well,” he said.

Preparations for the games started early this year with the construction and refurbishment of venues which include White City Stadium, Barbourfields Stadium, Bulawayo City Pool, Luveve Stadium, Zimbabwe International Trade Fair and Bulawayo Athletics Club.

The refurbishment is still in progress.

The sporting disciplines that countries will compete in are athletics, boxing, judo, tennis, football, swimming, basketball and netball.
