Talent Dube (24) was allegedly caught on camera entering the shop late Friday evening before proceeding to empty the safe.

Dube was not asked to plead when he briefly appeared before Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe charged with unlawful entry and theft. Through his lawyer Thompson Mabhikwa, Dube successfully applied for $200 bail and was ordered to continue residing at his given address and not to interfere with State witnesses.

He will appear in court again on Thursday.

Prosecutor Edward Ndlovu said last Friday at around 10pm, the manager of McInn supermarket, Johanne Nyirenda, and his subordinates locked the safe and a security guard cross checked it to see if it had been properly locked before they knocked off.

At around midnight, Dube proceeded to the retail outlet and forcibly gained entry into the shop by breaking burglar bars and opening the door using an iron bar.

“While inside, the accused opened the safe using duplicate keys and stole cash amounting to $1 348 and went away unnoticed,” Ndlovu said.

The manager discovered that there had been a break-in when he reported for duty the next morning and alerted the police who arrested the accused.

Police recovered $1 320, safe duplicate keys and the clothes Dube wore during the break-in.
