This came to light yesterday when Richard Chimuka appeared before Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Mafios Moyo, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chimuka in his defence told the court that he did not assault his wife, but they were fighting and she was too weak to fight back. “I did not assault my wife, we fought and I over powered her,” he said.

Prosecuting, Kingston Mukanganwi told the court that on that fateful night at around 10pm Chimuka was in bed with his wife Beatrice Mucheneripi when she received a call from Malume, IsiNdebele for uncle.

The wife is said to have rejected the call, so the husband would not hear the conversation.

“I saw her taking the phone and before answering she immediately hung up,” Chimuka said. “I did not ask anything till the next day when this Malume called again at around 9pm. I grabbed the phone and heard him ask why my wife cut the phone.

“Malume called me the day after our fight and insulted me, mentioning my private parts.”

Chimuka says his wife started slapping him accusing him of invading her privacy and that is when he furiously punched her back in the face, leading to her sustaining severe eye injuries.

The wife told the court that the Malume he assaulted her for was a security guard whom she usually left her wares with at the end of each day.

“He started punching me all over the body, accusing me of cheating on him with Malume,” she said.

“He is always violent at home, even our children know how brutal this man is.”
